Sotirios A. Tsaftaris

Chair in Machine Learning and Computer Vision

Sotirios A. Tsaftaris is currently Chair (Full Professor) in Machine Learning and Computer Vision at the University of Edinburgh. He also holds the Canon Medical/Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Healthcare AI.
He is the Director for the EPSRC-funded AI Hub for Causality in Healthcare AI with Real Data (CHAI). He is an ELLIS Fellow of the European Lab for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) of Edinburgh’s ELLIS Unit. Since 2023 he is a visiting researcher with Archimedes RC a research centre of excellence in AI in Athens, Greece. Between 2016 and 2023 he was a Turing Fellow with the Alan Turing Institute.

Steven McDonagh

Senior Lecturer

Steven McDonagh is a Senior Lecturer in IDCOM, University of Edinburgh where he works on Computer Vision and Machine Learning problems. Recent research directions include multi-modal, multi-task learning and medical imaging applications.

Alison O’Neil is a Senior Scientist in the AI Research Team at Canon Medical Research Europe and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh.

Michael Camilleri

Post-doctoral Researcher

Michael Camilleri is a Postgraduate Research Associate with the University of Dundee, collaborating closely with the VIOS group in Edinburgh. His research interests include Computer Vision, Probabilistic Modelling and general Machine Learning.

Edward Moroshko

Post-doctoral Researcher

Edward is a Post-doctoral Research Associate at The University of Edinburgh. He currently works with Prof. Sotirios Tsaftaris on the VPP-WARD project (Virtual Power Plant with Artificial Intelligence for Resilience and Decarbonisation).

Fasih Haider

Post-doctoral Researcher

Dr Haider has a track record of scientific research and innovations focused on multimodal information processing, ambient assisted living technologies, digital biomarkers for mental health monitoring, machine learning methods, feature selection and extraction methods, social signal processing, video intelligence and affective computing. He has experience in managing research, having led work packages in research projects and endorsed by TechNation UK as an internationally recognized leader in digital technologies.

Feng Chen

Feng is a Post-doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) at The University of Edinburgh. Currently he is working in machine learning/computer vision in agriculture with Prof. Sotirios Tsaftaris and Dr. Valerio Giuffrida.

Jingshuai Liu

Post-doctoral Researcher

Jingshuai Liu received the bachelor’s degree in electronic science and technology from Tianjin University, China, in 2016, and the master’s degree in signal processing and communications in 2018 from The University of Edinburgh, UK, where he received the Ph.D. degree in 2023. His research project is Compressive MRI with Deep Convolutional and Attentive Models, which concerns the incorporation of neural network models and deep learning-based methods in fast MRI reconstruction to achieve high image quality from sparsely sampled signals. During his study, Jingshuai Liu gained background knowledge in image processing, medical imaging, deep learning and neural network models, and developed independent and collaborative research ability and communication skills. His research interests include image processing, machining learning, medical imaging, and computer vision.

Christopher Boland is an EngD student at the University of Edinburgh and Canon Medical Research Europe supervised by Professor Sotirios Tsaftaris, Dr Sonia Dahdouh, and Dr Keith Goatman. His research is focused on learning with limited supervision for medical image analysis. He has a strong interest in the study of fairness and bias in AI for healthcare.

Connor Jordan is a PhD student at The University of Edinburgh supervised by Dr Athanasios Angeloudis and Professor Sotirios Tsaftaris. His research interests include renewable energy analysis, highly constrained practical optimisation and the application of deep learning techniques to scientific problems.

Her main research interests include causality and interpretability in machine learning, representation learning, generative models and their application in healthcare.

Nikos Spyrou is a PhD student at Archimedes RU / Athena RC and at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, coadvised by Prof. Yannis Panagakis and Prof. Sotirios Tsaftaris. His research interests mainly involve computer vision, representation learning, causality, generative models and applications in the medical domain.

His research interests include transfer learning, representation learning and self-supervised learning for medical image analysis.

Thomas Melistas is currently a PhD student at the Archimedes Research Unit (Athena RC) supervised by Prof. Sotirios Tsaftaris, Prof. Yannis Panagakis (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) and Dr. Giorgos Papanastasiou (Pfizer). His main research interests are causal machine learning and generative modeling. He is excited about the application of the above in the domains of medical imaging and computer vision.
